The desert forgave her."[^3] - Brotherhood of Night <br> ### Description In the Atacama desert, life is brutal. Throughout the 2020s and 2030s, climate change eroded much of the already-dry desert, with one exception: El Alicanto. Founded in the 20th century, the oasis had long been a popular tourist destination. While many nations struggled in the '30s and '40s, El Alicanto survived untouched. They would always welcome guests to their desert haven, but tried to keep to themselves as much as possible. Even [[Codex/Key Events/The Blackout|the Blackout of 2040]] had minimal impact on its hardened community; they always found a way to endure. The secret to El Alicanto's survival lies just below its people's feet: access to a massive aquifer, one which extended beyond Chile into Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, and Paraguay. As water resources elsewhere in the West began to dry up, this aquifer became critical to countries across the Americas - however El Alicanto's access remained largely unknown. That all changed in 2044 with the launch of Chile's Shearwater weather satellite. Increased rainfall and environmental improvements led to the aquifer's expansion, rumors claimed it was now linked to the Guarani Aquifer, which would make it one of the largest in the world. In 2045, [[Arkangel]] established a lithium mining site in the village, sparking outrage. The result was multiple violent clashes between the [[Brotherhood of Night]] and [[Guardia del Pueblo]], including the deadly [[Arkangel Riot of 2045|Arkangel Riot of '45]]. In 2048, intelligence regarding El Alicanto's aquifer access leaked to the [[Thousand Petals Coalition]]. After forming an alliance with Russian forces they made landfall in Chile with a singular objective: siege El Alicanto and seize control of the aquifer for the Coalition. US forces, reliant on the water supply along with its allies, reached an agreement with Chile to protect El Alicanto and Chilean interests. The Brotherhood of Night and Guardia del Pueblo declared a temporary ceasefire and united forces to combat the TPC threat.
