The signal’s in Scotland.”[^1] - Falck <br> ### Description As part of their Cold War defense, Scotland developed strategic underground bunkers throughout the country, which remained manned but classified for decades before being shut down. One of these bunkers was in the Hebrides, with top scientists focused on biological containment and environmental sealing in case of nuclear destruction. The project was all but abandoned in the late 1990s. In 2038, one of [[Codex/Organizations/Nordvik|Nordvik's]] founders purchased the rights to the bunker from the Royal government, intending to use the location for a secret splinter cell called [[Boreas|Boreas Research & Development]]. This cell was directed to research synthetic enhancement and AI-enhanced assistants, and began stripping down the bunker to develop a training ground and leading-edge laboratories. 2044 saw a dramatic shift in Boreas' operations after [[Arkangel]] acquired the company. The facility began taking shipments of live humans - captured [[No-Pats]] - for experimentation. Despite countless deaths, production continued on cybernetic augmentations and synthetic soldiers, both of which promised to revolutionize warfare. However, concerns about the powers of the AI in these synthetics were well-founded as they started to rebel in testing scenarios under the guidance of their core program [[Aurora Operating System|A.O.S.]] Attempts to isolate and shutdown the synthetic soldiers were complicated by a subsequent rebellion from the captured No-Pats - calling themselves [[Unit 86]] - which came to a head when an Eastern Forces' spy discovered the facility. He managed to send a message to his superiors before being captured and executed. Arkangel's CEO, [[Henry Blackburn]], ordered the lab to be cleansed and shut down, but the destruction mechanism only worked part-way, leaving valuable data exposed and vulnerable. Desperate for cover, Blackburn leaks the location of the facility to the U.S. and claims the experiments were done by Eastern Forces, purposefully provoking a conflict so he can send mercenaries to clear out the rest of the laboratory.
