We will be here after you." - O'Higgins "You may see this battle as just another in your never-ending war. But to us, the people of the Atacama, this is a war for our very survival."[^2] - O'Higgins "East and West will say this is about resources. For us it is about life. Our families. Our home. And we will fight to protect El Alicanto until the last guardian falls."[^2] - O'Higgins "Without O'Higgins and the Brotherhood, El Alicanto would have fallen long ago. It's admirable, really."[^3] - Crawford <br> ### Description Bernardo O'Higgins never wanted to have any legacy greater than to continue in his father's footsteps. The family business, Taller Mecánico O'Higgins, had been a staple of the community for decades. [[Haven|El Alicanto]] was peaceful, a place where Bernardo could keep to himself and take solace in his little corner the world had provided. As the world fell into chaos, El Alicanto had endured. Yes, [[Codex/Key Events/The Blackout|the blackout]] had been a setback for the thriving tourist oasis, but they survived as they had for a hundred years. That all changed with the Shearwater satellites. It brought [[Arkangel]] into their home, eager to mine their resources. The Chilean government had agreed - with little input from El Alicanto's people, mind you - and the [[Guardia del Pueblo]] was more than happy to enforce the state's wishes. They may not have been a part of the global conflict, but for this Atacama community, it was their battlefield. Once more, foreign corporations were coming for Chile's resources. Some things never change. Bernardo wanted to stay out of it and resisted the [[Brotherhood of Night|Brotherhood's]] offer to join their fight. Violeta eagerly joined, against her brother's wishes. It took her death in 2045 for that to change. He hadn't listened to her before - he had no choice now. As [[Shearwater Lithium Industries|Shearwater Lithium]] operations continued throughout the years, so too did the clashes between the Brotherhood and GDP. He squared off a few times with the GDP's Captain, [[Capt. Bastion Morales|Bastion Morales]], who Bernardo had once called his "brother by bond." It took the threat of the [[Thousand Petals Coalition]] for Bernardo and Bastion to see eye-to-eye. Bernardo still held contempt for his old friend, but the rage was gone. The global conflict had come to Chile, and if El Alicanto were to endure they had to fight side by side. Bernardo O'Higgins hated his namesake for most of his life. He had never asked to be associated with such a legacy. But as the world changed, it was time to embrace its reputation.
