![[player-card-archives-blog.png]] *Published on November 20th, 2023* --- Hey there, Comet here! I'm excited to talk about the new version of the Player Card Archives! This has been a long time coming for me and this initial release is just a glimpse into what I envision for this section. Player cards are a vital piece in the storytelling of Battlefield 2042. At this point, there are well over 200 player cards in the game, and that number alone is quite daunting for anyone who wants to read through them all! When I set out to update this section, I first thought that I wanted to make the player cards more approachable. I sought out a solution and I came across the concept of "Player Card Groups." What are Player Card Groups? As the name suggests, each Group will contain a set of player cards that make up a certain event important to the narrative. Instead of you having to connect the various cards together, Player Card Groups will do this and make the reading process more seamless. *I should note that Player Card Groups are currently not in this initial release as there weren't any Groups to make with the selection of cards.* Another important part of this update is "Player Card Tags." This feature works in conjunction with another functionality - that'll detail soon - to help you see what a player card entails at a glance. There are different categories of Player Card Tags, here's a breakdown: 1. **Appearances:** any characters that are mentioned or have an active role in a player card are a part of this Tags category. 2. **Release Period:** player cards are organized into the season they were released in (player cards released with the base game will be under "Preseason"). 3. **Type:** some cards provide backstory for a specialist or others progress the seasonal narrative. To organize these various kinds of player cards, I have designated "Types" for each player card. Here's the current list: 1. Quote: this type is entirely attributed to some of the Hazard Zone player cards. 2. Bio: a summary of a character's background. 3. Dialogue: an exchange between two or more characters. 4. Transmission: transmission transcript, "transmission" for short. 5. Stream of Consciousness: this term is defined as "refers to a narrative technique where the thoughts and emotions of a narrator or character are written out such that a reader can track the fluid mental state of these characters." ([Source](https://www.masterclass.com/articles/writing-101-what-is-stream-of-consciousness-writing-learn-about-stream-of-consciousness-in-literature-with-examples)) When you visit the main page of the Player Card Archives, you'll notice two things: (1) the player cards are listed and are located on their own page and (2) there are these "arrows" or chevrons located to the right of each link. I wanted to provide a better experience than the current version. Instead of scrolling down a long page with details on each player card, it's all situated on its own page. The chevrons function as a drop down menu, where you can see some details of the player card at a glance. You are able to see the player card background and the Tags. From this information, you get a good idea of what that player card might contain. So, now that I have explained some of the new features coming, I want to detail what's happening now. This initial release only contains "Specialist Cards." I did this because I want to gather feedback and then act upon it. By having a small portion of player cards available, I can update them faster compared to if I had all the player cards available. The faster I can iterate, the better it is for both you and me! Looking into the near future, once I have made the necessary adjustments, I will start to populate the rest of the player cards into the Archives. I hope you explore this new version of the Player Card Archives and I'm eager to hear your thoughts!
